Happy Thanksgiving! Let's do Redwork!

The holidays are upon us! Thanksgiving in the morning and Christmas less than a month away.! Such a busy time of year! It gets crazy, making gifts, wrapping presents, cooking! Hard to think about 2014 right around the corner.

On this cold November morning I am setting in my chair with my fuzzy, warm, purring kitty Feather! Thinking about what I want to learn in the new year. We have a wonderful opportunity in February! Leslie is going to teach us all sorts of exciting things to do with Red Work embroidery. I learned to embroidery when I was about 5 or 6 and never learned the things she is planning on teach us, so I can't wait! BUT, we need enough people interested to have the class. SO, have you called Cassie to register for the class? (see previous post)

Also in the spirit of Christmas, please comment in the space below this posting and you will receive a gift at the Christmas party in December!! You do have to be a member to get a gift but that is easy also! Join us! And, please comment below!!

Program - The Fabric Made Me Do IT!

The speaker for our Tuesday evening, Nov. 12, meeting will be Sherrie Jaqua from Sunshine Quilt Shop in Oscoda.

Color Confident Quilters
Picking fabric and colors is one of the things most quilters find intimidating. This lecture/trunk show will     make use       of actual quilt tops and the 3-in-1 Color   Tool to guide     your group through the Color Wheel.   They will leave with a  good understanding of how  to combine color and why certain colors look so wonderful together. We will   also discuss the importance of color in our lives,  and how it affects our  moods. Every quilter can gain  color confidence with a little training and this lecture will give them a very good start.

The next day, Wednesday, Nov. 13, will be her workshop on

The Fabric Made Me Do It
Take some of those “why did I ever buy that and what am I going to do with it” fabrics and bring them along to this workshop.  Sherrie will guide you through selecting a pattern and making use of border prints, panels, large print fabric, and pillow squares to make a simply stunning quilt.  Who doesn’t have fabric in their stash they simply don’t know what to do with and what better way to find out than in this entertaining learning experience. All levels of quilters are welcome.

We have openings for this workshop.  The cost will be $35.  It is an all day workshop (9 am-4 pm) held at Our Redeemer Church, 889 Poseyville Rd, Midland, MI.   Contact Cassie Cuthbert (989-631-3306) to reserve your spot soon and to get the supply list.

Block of the Month

This is the information on the project for this years block of the month.  We meet the 1st Wednesday of the month.  The first meeting will be September 4th which is before the first guild meeting.  The attached file shows the finished quilt and also a picture of a queen sized quilt.  The fabric requirements are included.  Also, the first block we will work on is the Kaleidoscope Star and I have included the cutting directions, which should be done before the meeting.

Following is a description from the pattern:
This pattern uses a combination of quilting techniques.  The stars are paper pieced.  The feathered star is completed by sewing short seams and then finishing it after the rest of the pieces are sewn.  The kaleidoscope star has an applique center circle. The border units use Seminole piecing.  In addition traditional piecing with quarter inch seams is used throughout.

I have been asked if quilters who are not members can join us.  That is fine as long as we don’t have more that 25 quilters.

The cost of the project is the price of the pattern & tax  ($37.00) plus a donation to the church for use of the room  ($5.00 each section).  We meet at Chapel Lane Church on Jefferson, 1st Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

If you are interested, please email me at mcgibbonl@ejourney.com, so I have an idea of how many patterns to bring.

See you there,

Linda McGibbon

A Great Quilt Show!!!!!!!

What a great show this past weekend!  Here is Fran Galke, who was chairman of a successful three days of beautiful quilt viewing with the able help of her good friends and co-horts, Linda Handlon, Kathi Gober, Judy Holycross, and Joan Doner.  (Please, please leave a comment if I left someone out - if I did, I apologize!)   There is so much work that goes into our shows and it was certainly in very capable hands.  Kathi Gober was also our featured quilter and her lovely quilts lined the entryway and hall into the exhibit of quilts.  Thanks also to all the Q2 members (and the fellows they brought along) who helped set up the panels, hang the quilts and set up our very profitable bazaar.   Another lovely show of the beautiful quilts done by a talented group of woman successfully completed.

Now, pictures - I took some and also hijacked some off Facebook.   I am sure if they are on Facebook, that the photographer wants them to be seen!   I am not going to try to put names to the quilts since I don't know all of them.  There were a record number this year, also.  So, here goes - enjoy the show!

There you have it - a good representation of our shows.    Hope you enjoyed looking it over again or, if you were unable to come, to see it for the first time.

Q2 March Meeting Coming Up

How would you like to have one of these lovely birds?   Someone will at the meeting Tuesday night, March 12th.  Julie Oman, a long time member of Q2, will be giving a talk on Surface Design and one of these darling little birds will be given away.  Julie does beautiful work, as probably many of you know, and has been experimenting and trying many new art forms.  For a lot of years, several of us did Artist Trading Cards and it was a lot of fun.  I love looking at the big book of ATC's I have.  I am so looking forward to Julie's presentation - you will love it.  Meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer Church with social time beforehand at 6:30.

If you are planning to take the jacket class, be prepared to sign up and bring your check to Nancy Stanley as stated in the latest newsletter.

Quilt show is getting close!! Time to get the forms in for the quilts you are planning to enter.

Don't forget Sit and Sew on Tuesday, March 19th at Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church.  From 10:00 to 3:00,  you will enjoy spending time with a good group of quilters.  Some go out to lunch, other's bring lunch with them.  Anything goes.  Some of you newer Q2 members would really enjoy this if you are able to attend.  Such a good way to get acquainted.
