March Meeting!

Hello everyone - our March 13th meeting is fast approaching and we will be talking about and doing prep work for our Quilt Show. Be sure to bring in your entry forms for each item you plan to enter in the Show. If you are unable to drop of your  items during set up for the Quilt Show you can bring to the April Meeting or let us know so we can work with you to pick up and deliver for you.

Remember that the Challenge Quilt will be due for showing at the April meeting. If you want to enter in the show, please complete an entry form.

We hope that you are all gathering up bazaar items.  Please bag and price your fabric. Books, magazines and patterns go for standard prices unless priced by you. Remember to price all other items you donate to save us time doing set up. We mark prices down 50% on Sunday - let us know if you have any items you DO NOT want marked down.

Please sign up for working at the show.  Many hands make light work, but the show isn't work!!! It is lots of fun and provides a great opportunity to get to know each other.

Last but not least - don't forget your Show and Tell! See you Tuesday!

February Meeting Reminder

Yep - time to get together again! We will be working on Give Aways for the Quilt Show so all the help we can get would be appreciated. Our Mystery Quilt pattern is posted above - as is the Quilt Entry Form (see 2011 Quilt Show above). This year we seemed to have missed the annual February snow storm by a week (LOL) so no excuses not to come (but dress warm and drive safe)!

January, 2011 Meeting

And the Oscar goes to----------Darlene and
Elaine, our co-chairmen of the Q2 Annual Quilt Show to be held - when is that show date?  Oh, I think it is in April!  The gals put on a very cute, well rehearsed skit passing along information and asking for help from the members of the guild.   It really is fun to work on the show and a good way to get acquainted with your fellow quilt enthusiasts.  So if you possibly can, jump on the quilt wagon and lend a hand with our show.  You will have fun in the process.

I have been trying to get a slideshow of the show and tell up but so far have not had success.  Don't know what is wrong since I have been putting them up each month for quite a while.  You can never do anything if the computer doesn't want you to do it.  Will keep working on it.

Not as many turned out on a snowy evening with the roads being rather dicey, but still a nice group.  Sandy Peregoy gave a presentation regarding the class she will be teaching next month.  We will be making a tote or purse and she had examples of the finished products and gave us info on what we had to do as homework before the class.  Looks like it will be a fun class.

Will keep trying on the slide show.  (It's up there  now along with pictures from our Christmas dinner at Pi's!)   Don't forget that next Tuesday will be Sit and Sew at Chapel Lane - hope to see you there.  (Click to enlarge)

Q2 October Meeting

Pictured is Carol Rose, one of our guild members, who gave a great talk on the art of fitting vests to our vastly different shapes.  Carol is an accomplished seamstress and makes gorgeous quilts, also.  She is one of our talented machine quilters.
She brought along a dozen or more beautiful vests that she had made - truly works of art and meticulously made.   Carol is shown here with Deb Badur who gave her a hand with the vests.  A delightful presentation, Carol.

Nancy Stanley, our president, announced that we now have 63 paid memberships.  There were several visitors at the meeting last night.  Hopefully, they will come back and join us.

Good news to hear that Elaine Cruise and Darlene Smith will co-chair the quilt show this coming spring.  Thank you so much for coming forward!!  Julie Oman's records will give you what you need to carry through with this and you will have the help of numerous talented and hardworking ladies working with you.

Nancy Wyss was the winner of the 50/50 - again!!   Good for you, Nancy!!  Have to tease you a bit!  All in good fun.

The batik jelly roll exchange is beginning and will follow the colors of the rainbow - first red, then orange, etc.  Should be a lot of gorgeous batiks gathered over the guild year.

Leslie Peterson gave information on the trip to Cincinnati to the big quilt show in April and also for the retreat in Gaylord in June.

If you wish to do so, we are gathering placemats to be used for meals on wheels.  They are to be generic and suitable for a man or woman and for anytime of the year.  If you wish to make some and bring them to guild you will be greeted with open arms.

Next month people will sign up for the Christmas dinner - my goodness, that will be here before we know it!

New show and tell slide show up in the right side bar.

If you signed up for the Jelly Roll excahnge, don't forget that it's red batiks this time.
Carol Rose will give a presentation on "How to fit a Vest"

See you there!

September, 2010, Meeting

Tuesday evening, September 14, a great turnout of Q2 members met for their first meeting of the 2010-11 year. To start the program, Ann Simansky and Patty Rapanos were introduced. Ann and Patty have opened a brand new quilt shop, The Park Bench, in the little shopping center at Swede and Wheeler. A welcome addition to Midland for all the quilters here and those shop hopping around Michigan. It's a bright, lovely shop full of beautiful fabric. I am sure we all will be dropping in and shopping there a lot.

This years Challenge Quilt was revealed by Julie Oman. The theme is "Wish You Were Here" - pick a country and do a 20 x 24 wall hanging in the style of a travel poster. For those of you who didn't get a chance to sign up this month, you will be able to do so at the October meeting. Nice challenge.

Carolyn Freeman and Johanna Frohm are in charge of the Mystery Quilt this year and talked about that. Even the snowbirds will be able to participate in this one.

Nancy Stanley, our president, explained the Rainbow Strip Club of Batiks - that should be a lot of fun, also. A color has been chosen for each month and those participating will bring twelve 2 1/2" strips cut from one yard of batik fabric. In October, the twelve strips will be cut from red batik. The strips you bring in will be mixed with those brought in by others and in November you will take home twelve assorted red pieces.

Deb Badour told us of the classes coming up and there are some good ones. You can check on the left sidebar to see what is offered and hopefully you will be able to sign up for some of them.

Dues ($15.00) are due and accepted by Earlene Albee, our treasurer.

Sit and Sew, a popular spinoff of Q2, has had another change for this month, September. We will be meeting on Friday, September 24 instead of the usual 3rd Tuesday. That is just for this month - in October, it goes back to the usual time.

Leslie Peterson and Linda McGibbon discussed plans for a retreat in Gladwin and a bus trip to a major quilt show next year. Stay tuned and I will post more information on those fun opportunities later on.

Lisa Lien talked of the making of placemats for Meals on Wheels - more will be forthcoming on that also.

And, if you wish to have something posted in our blog, e-mail Julie or Carol. It would be fun, too, if someone would like to put up a post about something - maybe a tutorial or some great hint you have discovered. It can be done!

January Q2 Meeting

Waiting for the meeting to start, Q2 members get caught up with what has been going on with their quilting buddies. It was a full agenda last night - business meeting, fat quarter drawing, door prize (lucky Deb B to win the just beautiful pin cushion in a teacup that Julie made - you can see it on her blog by clicking on it in the lefthand sidebar), round robins and a great show and tell that you can catch by going to the top of the right sidebar and watching the slideshow.

Then Linda M gave us a great demonstration of the way she designs her quilts on Electric Quilt 6. The above picture of her playing card for last year's challenge was designed on that program. Linda is absolutely amazing with her designing and carrying her designs through to completion. Her work is awesome! This little wallhanging that was in our show - as well as the gorgeous quilt that won Viewer's Choice - were also designed on EQ6. It is software that has many facets - it would also be great for those of us who adore applique and I am sure embroiderer's could even find patterns therein. I have EQ5 but have never done much more than "play" with it and it's wonderful for that, also. I did find out how to import fabric and have designed some simple things. I have contemplated updating to 6 and would if I were younger. I keep wondering how old you have to be to quit wanting to do everything you see!
Thank you, Linda, for a great presentation. We look forward to seeing your next amazing piece.

January Newsletter

Following is a copy of the January Newsletter that went out by e-mail today. There were four address failures and three members who do not have e-mail addresses so seven did not get this message and we are sorry this happened. Hopefully, there will be a new secretary by the time the Newsletter is due out in February.

Happy New Year! I hope each of you had a wonderful Holiday with friends and family.
A big Thank You to Carol B for getting this newsletter out. She
has done an excellent job in putting it together for us.

I will have printouts that show the Proposed Bylaws with a note of
the current Bylaws for comparison you may pick the at the
meeting. There are no big changes except for term limits.
I think we can vote that night after discussion. The Proposed
Bylaws had been sent to you earlier.

November Meeting

Quilters Squared met last night at our new meeting room in Our Redeemer Church on Poseyville Road. A lively group of ladies attended to hear Ann Simanskey from Material Mart give a talk on
Weapons of Mass Instruction pertaining to cloth, thread and needles. Ann also brought along some of the many lovely quilts she has made over the years. Thank you, Ann, for a great presentation.

A lovely quilt done with machine embroidered blocks is shown to the group.

The business meeting was conducted by our Prez, Nancy Stanley. Julie Oman, who heads up our quilt show, talked about the early preparations and asked for members to sign up for helping with the many advance preparations needed for a successful show. Round robin quilts were shown and bags redistributed - looking good, girls! There is a slide show of our November Show and Tell on the right sidebar.
Julie made a beautiful little wall hanging for a giveaway to people leaving comments on the blog. The lucky winner of that drawing was Jean Langrill. I was not allowed to be in the drawing, darned it! :-( You can see a picture of it by going back several posts. I will take my turn and do a giveaway, also, by the January meeting. Will let you know for sure.
Don't forget that next Tuesday will be Sit and Sew - come if you can! The time and place are in the left sidebar.

A Note from Nancy

Hi, Ladies, This has been a hard month. Our Secretary, Carrie Mayday's father passed away the end of the month of October. She has obviously had many other things on her list to do. Tam Premo had offered to do the newsletter and has had severe health problems. The end result is you may not receive an October Newsletter.

A couple of things you need to know what to expect at the meeting. First we will have Ann Simanskey from Material Mart for a program. (Note from FOH - see the previous blog posted by Julie).

The Fat Quarter exchange will be Wonderful Neutrals (beiges, creams, white/white).

The board will be doing a ByLaws Review very soon. You will get a copy of the revision and we will vote.

I hope that helps and we will see you Tuesday.

November Program

Heh everyone - less then a week before our next meeting! This month Ann Simanskey will be presenting "Weapons of Mass Instruction" - different types of threads, needles and fabrics, and how they can be used (should be interesting - remember our big debate last year during the repair guy's visit on the "worthiness" of Coats thread???). Be sure to bring your Show and Tell, Round Robin and anything else you would like to share. Also, FOH and I would appreciate you returning the form from last month with your blog ideas AND we need those ideas for our Blacksmith partners for next year's Quilt Show (whew, let me catch my breath, that sounds like a lot!).

Finally - don't forget - keep leaving comments - repeat "offenders" have even a better chance of winning our fabulous Give Away! Cheers to those of you who have persevered and figured out how to blog as "anonymous" ;->! See you soon! Jewels

October Meeting

Quilters Squared met last night with a very enthusiastic group in attendance. Pictured above is Delphine of Delphine's Quilt Shop in Gaylord, MI, who presented a trunk show featuring many beautiful old antique quilts and equally beautiful quilts that she had made. I apologize for some of my pictures many of which I had to delete. Won't try to take them with the zoom since I think that is what made them so fuzzy.

This was one of the quilts that everyone loved. It had been rescued from a landfill! How could that be that someone would toss a lovely quilttop like that out in the trash? Delphine gave a great presentation that everyone enjoyed. Thanks so much!!

This is a lovely example of her quilts. Her work is wonderful. A slideshow is on the sidebar. Enjoy.

Here is a quilt from Show and Tell. I cannot remember who it was made by - isn't it a beauty? If it's yours or if you know who it belongs to, you could leave a comment ;_). Show and Tell is running on the sidebar.

Nancy, our president, Robyn and Lori show off a beautiful top.

Incredible! One by Linda McGibbons - thousands of pieces in this paperpieced masterpiece that she designed on EQ!
Lori, Nancy and Deb doing business with Earlene, our treasurer. All we can see of Earlene is her arm! Nancy Stanley, our president, ready to call the meeting to order.

These ladies are enjoying whatever is in the box - and in the second picture we have members at our quilting gambling table. Speaking of which - see the lovely orange bag? That is the October door prize brought by Tam. At our Christmas dinner last December, I won the doorprize - and actually drew my own name. I had won quite a few of the fat quarter drawings and was hearing all kind of remarks so I haven't been putting fat quarters in. So, therefore, I was really razzed in December! Last night, Julie went to buy some tickets and I gave her a dollar. The first number drawn out wasn't claimed by anyone - so there was another draw. Can you believe it was my number again? Lots of giggles and catcalls and lots of fun!! And what a great doorprize - a small portable iron that is new on the market. I should buy some tickets for the lottery, maybe------
I think Nancy Wyse won the fat quarters - someone correct me if I am wrong.
The first round of the round robins were shown. I took some pictures but not a one came out so will try and do better next time.
We are in need of a co-chairman and Linda McGibbons will accept that office. Thank you, Linda!
Tomorrow is my class in machine buttonhole applique at the Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church. I am looking forward to seeing some of you and hope that I can do a good job teaching. I am certainly going to try!
If I left anything out and you would like to see it on the blog, leave a comment or e-mail me at qltncarol@aol.com.
Happy Quilting!

September 8th Meeting

Well everyone - I apologize now for the photos - I need to spend more time setting up before snapping (will probably let Carol do the shoots from now on as she is much better at it).

I heard 69 folks attended our first meeting of the season! Wow, that must be a record for us! Thank you Nancy Wyse for helping us get settled into our new digs. We even had a lovely "Welcome" poster!

Ami Simms was our guest speaker (How Not To Make A Prize Winning Quilt) - wasn't she great (I'll never forget her shower curtain ;->). We may be starting a tradition on "booing" winners of our various monthly draws - but all in fun.

The gals who took her class earlier in the day got to show off the end results...

Our Temp Prez Melissa and on of our Program Peeps, Tam were busy at the back getting everyone signed up for all our wonderful upcoming classes (I'll post more details shortly). Congratulations, and many thanks, to Nancy Stanley who has graciously agreed to be our 2009/2010 Prez. Give her a big smile, handshake, hug (and probably some sympathy) next time you see her! Also, let her know if you are interested in this year's Round Robin...

We also did our "inchie" exchange amongst other things - they really were cute. No Show and Tell this month but we expect to see great things in October!

The 2009-2010 Quilt Challenge was introduced by Kathy - this year's theme is Storytime (check the side bar for more information).

Still waiting to hear about any shops you would like to see us list, your glob (whoops, meant blog) if you have one, and anything else you like to see on our site. Leave a comment and I will be happy to get back to you.
And new to our site - we do have "Bees" - check out the list and if you have any to add let us know!
